Detailed Solution

The rebellion of the indigo planters occurred in Champaran in 1917. It was the first ever mass movement started by Mahatma Gandhi. This kind of movement was based on truth and non-violence and was widely known as Satyagraha. Mahatma Gandhi thought that one could win the battle even by being non-violent and aggressive. He travelled to Champaran to motivate the peasants to stand against the oppressive plantation system. The main purpose of this movement was to support the farmers in their revolt against the Britishers because the farmers were forced to grow indigo which affected the soil fertility.
