Detailed Solution

From Meerut, the rebels of the Revolt of 1857 rushed to Delhi and named Bahadur Shah Zafar as their leader.
As the final Mughal Emperor in India and for his part in the Indian Revolt of 1857, Bahadur Shah is most known. He played no active part in it; rather, the sepoys, who recognised Bahadur Shah as the Emperor of Hindustan, used him almost like a pawn. He was their choice as the figurehead they wanted to unite around. The British detained him and members of his family for his "part" in the sepoys' actions, including the murder of English citizens in Delhi.
