During pachytene recombination nodules appear between non-sister chromatids. These are the sites at which crossing over occurs. Chromatid is the unit of crossing over. The points of exchange where chromatids break and fuse are called chiasmata. Crossing over is an enzyme mediated process and the enzyme involved is called recombinase.
