The poverty reduction is marked by regional differences. The World Bank explains the ratio of people in different nations living in massive economic poverty as living on less than or equal to $1.90 per day has reduced from 36 per cent in 1990 to 10 per cent in 2015. Global poverty has been gradually declining, but huge regional differences are highlighted. Poverty reduced gradually in China and Southeast Asian countries as a conclusion of fast economic development and massive investments in human resource development. The poor in China fell from 88.3 per cent in 1981 to around 14.7 per cent in 2008 to about 0.6 per cent in 2019. In the nations of South Asia (India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Bhutan), the fall has also been rapid, that is, 34 per cent in 2005 to about 15.2 per cent in 2014. With a reduction in the proportion of the poor, the number of poor has also reduced gradually from 510.4 million in 2005 to around 274.5 million in 2013. Due to varying poverty line definitions, poverty in India is also marked higher than the national measures.
