Throughout early medieval India, there was a gradual clearing of forests to extend agriculture over vast regions. This has led to an increase in the population engaged in agriculture and other related activities. As more people came into productive land this led to differentiation in the occupations. This differentiation of the occupation later led to the creation of many jatis or sub-castes. They ranked based on their backgrounds as well as occupations. Over a period of time, each jati created its regulations and these regulations of the group were enforced by the jati panchayat. Every member of that particular jati was supposed to follow these rules and regulations which were governed by a chieftain.
