Detailed Solution

The Revolt of 1857 broke out in Meerut. In the garrison town of Meerut, 40 miles northeast of Delhi, sepoys of the east India Company's army staged a mutiny on May 10, 1857, signalling the start of the uprising. The British made the first move toward seizing control of northern India at the Battle of Plassey in 1757. The character and procedures of colonial government after 1757 also contributed to the Revolt of 1857, which considerably impacted British policies toward India. British expansionist strategies, economic exploitation, and administrative innovations had a cumulative negative impact over time that impacted everyone—rulers of Indian states, sepoys, zamindars, peasants, traders, craftsmen, gurus, maulvis, and so forth. The British Empire in India was shaken to its very foundation in 1857 when the long-simmering resentment finally burst into a violent storm in the form of the Revolt of 1857.
