The Revolt of 1857 first started in Meerut. In Meerut, the sepoys refused to use the greased cartridges. The cartridges were greased with the fat of pig and cow. Moreover, these cartridges had to be bitten before use which hurt the religious sentiments of the Indians. Many soldiers were jailed, and some were dismissed from the service for raising their voices against this. Hence, the soldiers joined hands against the Britishers. They helped to release the imprisoned soldiers and attacked the British officials. In addition, they set fire to the buildings and property of Brtish and captured arms and ammunition.
