The Revolt of 1857 is also known as the First War of Independence. Vinayak Damodar Savarkar phrased this expression in 1909. The rebellion was given that name since it was the first time Indian citizens had united against the British. The 1857 revolt marked the purposely initiated launch of the fight for independence from British authoritarianism. The 1857 revolt is called the Sepoy Mutiny, the First War of Independence and various other names. The revolt was launched in Meerut on May 10, 1857.
