The Revolt of 1857 started from Meerut. In 1857 and 1858, there was a great uprising against the British East India Company's control in India. The main event that sparked the war occurred on January 23, 1857, when the sepoys refused to fire grease-covered bullets. Pig fat had been used to lubricate the bullets. On May 10, 1857, a sepoy mutiny in the garrison town of Meerut served as the catalyst for the uprising. Other mutinies and civil uprisings also occurred, primarily in central India and the upper Gangetic plain, though uprisings also took place further north and east. The Indian Revolution of 1857 upended the British East India Company's foundations and exposed their incompetence in running the country's administration.
