The Revolution of 1789 ultimately led to the Execution of the king.
King Louis XVI was deposed during the French Revolution of 1789. The monarchy was still in effect, but an elected assembly controlled most of the decisions. In 1791, a new constitution was finished, and Louis gave the impression that he agreed with the new constitution. Still, it soon became apparent to the general public that he secretly wished the revolution would fail. He attempted to flee France in June 1791 but was apprehended. Louis now believed that a foreign invasion would end the revolution and restore him to power because he had lost all of his remaining credibility as a leader, but it did not happen. A hidden cabinet in the Tuileries Palace was found to hold evidence of Louis' counterrevolutionary sentiments and correspondence with foreign governments in November 1792. On January 21, 1793, he was guillotined after being tried for treason.
