Detailed Solution

The Roman Church imposed strict controls over publishers and booksellers and began to maintain an Index of Prohibited Books from 1558.
Gutenberg's development of the printing press led to the wider circulation of books and facilitated the easy transmission of ideas. The press made it possible, even for people disagreeing with established authorities, to print and circulate their ideas. Religious leaders, i.e. the Roman Catholic Church, dreaded the lack of control over what was published and read and the irreligious and rebellious thoughts that might spread. They saw printed literature as a threat to their authority. As a result, restrictions were imposed on publishers and booksellers to suppress popular readings and questioning of faith. They started maintaining a list of books considered heretical or harmful to the Christian faith from 1558. This list was known as the Index of Prohibited Books (Index Librorum Prohibitorum).
