First, let's understand what Roman numerals are. There are two ways of representing numbers. One is Hindu-Arabic numerals and the other is Roman numerals. The representation of numbers using digits such as 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 falls under Hindu-Arabic numerals. Representation of numbers using capital letters such as I, V, X, L, M... falls under Roman numerals.

1. The basic numbers are represented by the letters I, V, X, L, C, D and M.
2. The order of digit placement is such that the largest value is placed first.
3. We must add the values of the numbers if a higher digit is placed before the smaller digit.
4. If a higher number is placed after a smaller number, we must subtract the lower number from the higher number.
5. One digit can be repeated a maximum of three times in a row.
6. The digits V, L and D appear only once and not more than once in a row.
7. We cannot subtract a digit from another digit that is more than 10 times larger.

We can represent 900 as 900 = 1000 – 100
The digits for 1000 and 100 are known. They are M and C. We want 900, so according to the rules, we have to subtract 100 from 1000. So we have to put the higher number behind the lower number. So we can write it as CM.
