In March 1919, the Rowlatt Act was imposed. It allowed the government to imprison anyone residing in British India without a trial for up to two years. The imperial authorities received authority under this act to deal with revolutionary activity. The British government gained significant authority with this act, enabling them to stifle political activity and to hold political prisoners for two years without charge. The Imperial Legislative Council quickly enacted this bill even though all Indian members vehemently opposed it. This act restricted the right to speech.
