The rubber extraction in the Putumayo region depended on the labour of Huitotos. The Peruvian Rubber Company supervised rubber extraction with Peruvian and British interests. The local Indians, or Huitotos, were forced to work in poor conditions. Around 4000 tons of rubber were produced between 1900 and 1912. This rubber production was associated with losing around 30,000 Indians to disease, torture, and flight. An employee’s letter stated that the manager at these plantations would slaughter the defenceless Indians and leave the ground covered with a corpse.
