In 1228 CE, Sukaphaa, a Shan ruler from Mong Mao, conquered the Brahmaputra valley and founded the Ahom kingdom. Between 1228 through 1826 CE, the Ahom dynasty reigned. With the Burmese invasion of Assam and the signing of the Yandaboo Treaty in 1826 CE, this dynasty's authority came to an end. The British East India Company thereafter annexed the region.
