Detailed Solution

The Ryotwari System was a revenue collection system introduced by Captain Alexander Read and Thomas Munro in 1820. The Ryotwari system was Madras Presidency's standard tax collection system. The Ryotwari system was one of the three central tax collection systems in British India. The idea was that government authorities would collect land tax from each peasant directly. For this reason, all holdings were measured and analysed based on crop potential and existing cultivation. Two of the system's advantages were eliminating intermediaries and assessing the tax on property that was cultivated rather than just occupied. However, these advantages were outweighed by the costs of comprehensive measurement and individual data collection.
