The Ryotwari system was introduced in 1820.
In 1820, Munro and Charles Reed introduced the Ryotwari system in the Madras and Bombay regions. A land income scheme allowed the British government to deal with the cultivators directly, eliminating commission, exploitation, and phoney; instead, both the government and the cultivator had a direct settlement. In this approach, the income was predetermined for a specific year within a time frame no longer than 30 years. This developed into a strict regime for farmers.
