Detailed Solution

The sales tax and the amount of the bill vary in direct proportion.
We know that if two quantities go up or down simultaneously, they are said to be in direct proportion. When one quantity rises while the other falls, it is said that the two quantities are inversely proportional.
As stated, an increase in sales tax will result in higher prices, which will increase the total amount of the bill. Similarly, if sales tax is decreased, the price will drop, resulting in a decreased total bill.
Example: If the purchase price is 200 and the applicable sale tax is 40%, the total amount due is 280. However, if the sale tax is decreased to 8% and the purchase price is 200, the total amount owed is R.184.
Therefore, the sales tax and the amount of the bill vary in direct proportion.
