On January 31, 1930, Gandhiji wrote Viceroy Irwin a letter outlining eleven demands. The elimination of the salt tax was the most crucial of all these requests. Everyone eats salt, which is one of the most fundamental ingredients in cuisine. The collective power displayed its most tyrannical side by taxing salt and creating a monopoly over its production.
