The Saminist Movement was headed by Surontiko Samin. Around 1890, Surontiko Samin came forward with a set of arguments. He represented a group of locals who did not accept the Dutch policies. He stated that the government did not create the earth, water, wind, or wood, so it could not claim ownership of natural resources and forests. Samin’s sons-in-law helped him organise the Saminist Movement. The followers came to be called Saminists, who protested by lying down when the Dutch officials came to survey forests, and others refused to pay rents or taxes or provide free labour.
