The Satnami Movement was founded by Ghasidas.
Ghasidas worked among the leatherworkers and organised a movement to raise their social standing, launching the Satnami movement in Central India. People from the Non-Brahman castes started organising activities against caste discrimination and gradually requested social equality and justice by the second part of the nineteenth century. Like in eastern Bengal, members of the Matua sect of Haridas Thakur worked alongside Chandala farmers. Haridas contested Brahmanical literature that backed the caste system.
