The Satyagraha movement started for the first time in Champaran.
Gandhi entered Indian politics through the Champaran Satyagraha in 1917. The Satyagraha was against the Tinkathia system. After getting aware of the situation in Champaran, Gandhi went there to listen to the narratives of both sides. He then redressed the grievance of the cultivators who were oppressed by the indigo planters. The cultivator's condition was very miserable because the farmers protested against growing indigo with barely any payment for it. Thus many tenant farmers were also forced to produce some Indigo on a portion of their tenancy. But their condition worsened when Germany invented a cheaper indigo dye.
