Mahatma Gandhi initiated the Satyagraha movement. Satyagraha, or "holding fast to the truth", or "the power of truth", is a form of resistance to violence or resistance to society. The name satyagraha was coined and developed by Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948), who used satyagraha in the Indian liberation struggle and during his early battle in South Africa for Indian rights. Satyagraha's theory contributed to Martin Luther King Jr.'s campaigns. And James Bevel during the Civil Rights Movement in the United States, Nelson Mandela's struggle against apartheid in South Africa, and much other social justice and similar organizations.
