The Satyagraha movement was launched for the first time in Champaran.
Gandhi entered the politics of India through the Champaran Satyagraha in 1917. This movement was against the Tinkathia system in Champaran, Bihar. After getting aware of the situation, Gandhi went to Champaran and listened to the stories of both sides. He then redressed the grievance of the cultivators who were oppressed by the indigo planters. The cultivator's condition was very miserable, and they were protesting against having to grow indigo with barely any payment for it. As a result, many tenant farmers were forced to produce some Indigo on a portion of their tenancy. However, Germany invented a cheaper dye, decreasing the demand for indigo which worsened the situation for the peasants at Champaran.
