According to the Census of India, the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes are made up of hundreds of castes or tribes whose names are included in an official Schedule. Those who were formerly viewed as outcastes in the Hindu social system are included in the Scheduled Castes, often known as Dalits. Communities that lived in seclusion, mainly in hills and forests, are included in the Scheduled Tribes, sometimes known as Adivasis. The Other Backward Classes are not yet included in the Census. Their population is believed to be around 41% according to the National Sample Survey of 2004–2005. Thus, the SC, ST, and OBC make up about two-thirds of the total population of the nation and roughly three-quarters of the total population.
