The Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes Act of 1989 is an act of the Parliament of India enacted to prevent atrocities and hate crimes against scheduled castes and scheduled tribes. The Act was passed in the Parliament of India on 11 September 1989 and notified on 30 January 1990. The Act lists actions that would be considered crimes against the SCs and STs; actions that would be considered modes of humiliation, dispossession of Dalits and Adivasis of their meagre resources, as crimes against Dalit and tribal women.
