Detailed Solution

The second vat in Indigo production was also known as the beater vat.
A vat is fermenting or a storage vessel. The indigo liquid solution was continuously stirred and beaten with paddles in the second vat, known as the beater vat. Lime water was added to the vat when the liquid began to turn green and then blue. The indigo gradually separated into flakes, muddy sediment settled at the vat's bottom, and a clear liquid rose to the surface. The liquid was drained, and the sediment - the indigo pulp - was transferred to the settling vat, pressed, and dried for sale.
