Detailed Solution

The primary sector employs the majority of the population in India.
India has always been an agrarian-centered economy. Here, the agricultural sector provides more job opportunities than the other two sectors (secondary and tertiary) combined. It provides a livelihood to over 50% of the total workforce of the country. However, its contribution to the country’s GDP is as low as 19%. This is because, due to the fragmentation of lands, the average size of the holdings of an Indian farmer is very low, which leads to low productivity per holder. Also, the rural population does not have access to alternate income-generating activities. Due to this, they are forced to stay in agriculture, which has resulted in disguised unemployment in this sector.
