E.V. Ramaswamy Naicker established the Self-Respect Movement in Tamil Nadu in 1925. It was an egalitarian movement that promoted the concepts of dismantling the Brahminical rule, securing equal rights for women and members of the underprivileged classes, and reviving Dravidian languages, including Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam. The Self-Respect Movement was an active social movement to overturn the modern Hindu social structure completely and found a new, rational society devoid of caste, religion, and deities. The movement attempts to eliminate the social structure of the society in which some men claim to be of higher birth than others, and one class of people claims to be superior to another. All should naturally experience a sense of community and friendship.
