The fractional distillation technique is employed in the separation of alcohol and water.
The method of fractional distillation is based on the fact that the compounds in the mixture have different boiling points. If the mixture of two or more liquids is heated then one boils while the other liquid evaporates. In the case of alcohol and water mixture, alcohol boils at a lower temperature (78 or 173.3) than water because of this the alcohol evaporates while a majority of the water remains at liquid state.
