Detailed Solution

The settlement of Peasant was known as Ur in the Chola Empire. These villages banded together to form larger units known as Nadu. The village council and the nadu were in charge of several administrative functions, such as administering justice and collecting taxes.
Under the supervision of the central Chola government, wealthy peasants of the Vellala caste wielded considerable power over the affairs of Tamil Nadu. As a mark of respect, the Chola kings bestowed titles such as muvendavelan (a velan or Peasant serving three kings), araiyar (chief), and others on wealthy landowners.
