Detailed Solution

The Sinhala speakers form 74 per cent of the total population in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka's population is diverse. The two most influential social groups are those who speak Sinhala and Tamil, which comprise 74% and 18% of the people. There are two sub-groups of Tamils. Sri Lankan Tamils are the nation's native Tamils (13 per cent). The remaining group is referred to as Indian Tamils, and their ancestors arrived from India as plantation labourers during the colonial period. Sri Lankan Tamils are mainly found in the north and east of the country. While most Tamils are Hindus or Muslims, most Sinhala speakers are Buddhists. Both Tamil and Sinhala-speaking Christians make up roughly 7% of the population.
