Detailed Solution

The slave trade started in the 17th century.
The slave trade began in the 17th century. The slave trade began because Europeans were unwilling to go to distant lands to trade as this would cause labor shortages on the plantations. This, therefore, led to the slave trade in the triangle - Europe, Africa, and the Americas. French merchants from the port of Nantes to the coast of Africa brought slaves from local chiefs. Through ships, they were brought to the Caribbean and sold to plantation owners. Due to the slave trade, ports such as Bordeaux and Nantes enjoyed economic prosperity. The slave trade in a triangular pattern was conducted between Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Since the 17th century, French traders have traveled from the ports of Bordeaux and Nantes to Africa, where they bought slaves from local chiefs. From there, the slaves were branded, chained, and sent to the Caribbean to be sold to plantation owners. Such exploitation of African slaves allowed the European market to flourish with products such as sugar, indigo, and coffee.
