The society in India was divided on the lines of the caste system.
In India, castes or the varna system were used to separate society. There were other differences in society than those between males and women. Most regions had caste-based divisions of the population. Kshatriyas and Brahmans regarded themselves as belonging to "higher castes." Others were positioned after them, including merchants and moneylenders (commonly referred to as Vaishyas). Peasants and artisans like weavers and potters then emerged (referred to as Shudras). The lowest caste members were those who laboured to maintain towns and villages clean or did activities that upper caste members regarded as "polluting," that is, jobs that could result in caste rank loss. Numerous members of these lower castes were also regarded as "untouchables" by the upper castes. They were not permitted to enter temples, draw water from upper caste wells, or bathe in ponds where upper castes bathed. They were regarded as less than human.
