Detailed Solution

The feudal system included a society of estates. In France before 1789, this system of estates was called the “Old Regime”. French society before the French revolution was divided into 3 estates. The first estate consisted of the clergy- a Group of persons assigned with special functions in the church. The second estate consisted of the nobles. The Third includes merchants, peasants, etc. The first 2 estates enjoyed privilege by birth and were exempted from paying taxes to the state. The nobles enjoyed one more right called feudal privilege which included the extraction of feudal dues from peasants. These peasants were obliged to work in these noble’s houses, fields, and even in the army. The church too extracted taxes from these peasants in direct and indirect ways.
