Detailed Solution

The southwest monsoon has two branches.
The Southwest monsoon entering India is split into two branches due to India’s topography. The Arabian Sea branch of the southwest monsoon causes rainfall on the west coast, while the Bay of Bengal branch affects the eastern side. The Arabian Sea branch first strikes the Western Ghats in South India, causing heavy rainfall on the windward sides and scarce rainfall in the rain shadow regions. It moves towards the Mumbai coast and bypasses the Thar desert without causing any rainfall since the Aravallis are parallel to the wind direction. The Bay of Bengal branch goes straight to the northeast hills, where they get trapped between the hills and cause torrential rainfall. It moves further north towards the Himalayas and causes rainfall.
