On May 14, 1973, the first U.S. space station, Skylab, was launched into Earth orbit. Skylab was the first experimental space station built by the United States. Skylab's mission objectives were twofold: To demonstrate that humans can live and work in space for extended periods, as well as to broaden our understanding of solar astronomy beyond Earth-based observations. Despite early mechanical difficulties, three three-man crews worked for 171 days and 13 hours in the Skylab workshop. It was the site of nearly 300 scientific and technological experiments, including medical tests on humans' ability to adapt to zero gravity, solar observations, and detailed Earth resource experiments.
