A kingdom as vast as Delhi Sultanate and its consolidation requires reliable governors and administrators. Rather than appointing landed chieftains and aristocrats as governors, the early Sultans of the Delhi, mainly Iltutmish, favoured appointing their special slaves, which were purchased for military service and were known as Bandagan. They were trained carefully to handle some of the most crucial political offices in the kingdom. As the slaves depended on their masters, the Sultan could rely on and trust them. A wise man has said that it is better to have a worthy and experienced slave than a son.
