The splitting of white light into seven colors on passing through a prism is called dispersion.
The white light is separated into its different constituent colours because of refraction and Snell's law. This phenomenon is called the dispersion of light. The medium that brings about dispersion is called the dispersive medium. White light only appears white because it is composed of every colour on the visible spectrum. Although they are very close, the index of refraction for each colour is unique in non-vacuous materials.
