Detailed Solution

The Sri Lankan government followed preferential policies that favoured Sinhala applicants.
Sri Lanka gained its independence in 1948. By virtue of their majority, Sinhala politicians sought to seize control of the government. As a result, the democratically elected government enacted a slew of Majoritarian policies to cement Sinhala supremacy.
Moreover, an Act was passed in 1956 to recognise Sinhala as the sole official language, ignoring Tamil. The governments implemented preferential procedures that favoured Sinhala applicants for academic and government positions. A new constitution mandated that the state safeguard and promote Buddhism. All of these government policies, one after the other, contributed to a growing sense of estrangement among Sri Lankan Tamils. As a result, the Sinhala and Tamil communities deteriorated over time.
