Detailed Solution

The Sri Lankan government had adopted majoritarian measures to establish Sinhala supremacy. In Sri Lanka, Sinhala make up the majority. Sri Lankan Tamils are in the minority. Thus, the first democratically elected government of Sri Lanka was constituted by members of the Sinhala community after its independence in 1948. The Sinhala community-dominated government took measures that ignored the interests of the minority Tamil community in the country. In 1956, a law was passed that recognised Sinhala as the only official language. A policy in favour of Sinhala applicants in universities and government posts was initiated. These decisions gradually increased the sense of alienation among the Tamils in Sri Lanka.
