Detailed Solution

The state of Sri Lanka protected and fostered Buddhism under the Act of 1956.
The composition of Sri Lanka, an island country with a democratic set-up, is divided into two parts. The majority community is the Sinhalese, and the minority community is the Tamils. There are two types of Tamils in the country: Sri Lankan and Indian Tamils. Indian Tamils are those Tamilians of India who migrated to Sri Lanka during the colonial period. The government of Sri Lanka favours the majority community, so it made rules and provisions to protect and foster the religion of the majority community (Buddhism). It was the 1956 Act which made Sinhalese the official language of the country too.
