Detailed Solution

The states ruled directly by British officials were called provinces. In contemporaneous use, the region under British administration was referred to as India, and it encompassed both areas directly managed by the United Kingdom, known as British India, and areas ruled by indigenous monarchs but under British tutelage or paramountcy, known as princely states. Before India's independence in 1947, the provinces and princely states were the two types of states in the country. The British authorities nominated by the Viceroy governed directly over the provinces. Local, hereditary kings ruled princely nations, which recognised British sovereignty in exchange for local autonomy. The Nizam of Hyderabad and Maharaja Hari Singh of Jammu and Kashmir are two examples of princely state monarchs.
