Detailed Solution

Buffer stock is the stock of food grains, mainly wheat and rice, procured by the Government through the Food Corporation of India (FCI). The FCI purchases a huge amount of wheat and rice from the states with surplus production. The farmers are provided with the pre-announced price for their crops. These prices are declared by the Government every year before the sowing season to enhance production quality and provide incentives to the farmers. These grains are stored in the granaries and used for distribution to the poorer sections of society or in times of natural calamities to meet food security requirements.
