Detailed Solution

The stomach is a site for digestion, and not much absorption takes place. The food swallowed reaches the stomach through the food pipe or oesophagus. It is acted upon by the digestive enzymes that break down the proteins and carbohydrates into amino acids and glucose. The hydrochloric acid kills germs, and the movement of the stomach walls churns the food to make it soft and easy to absorb. However, only water is absorbed by the stomach walls. Small amounts of soluble lipids (fat) are also absorbed together with soluble drugs like aspirin. The nutrients like glucose and amino acids are absorbed by the walls of the small intestine.
