Detailed Solution

The story of the Monkey King was found at Bharhut temple. One Jataka story that has become popular in Buddhist art is the Mahakapi Jataka. This Jataka describes how Bodhisattva was born as a great ape who dwelt in a beautiful Himalayan forest among a herd of great monkeys. A beautiful depiction of this Jataka is found in a medallion at Bharhut (an important Buddhist site in the present state of Madhya Pradesh, India). The scene is divided by a flowing river full of fish. On either side of the river are two trees: the tree on the right is where the monkeys live, and the smaller tree on the left is the tree from which they escaped. Between these trees, the great gibbon (Bodhisattva) ties one end of the bamboo stick to the top of the tree on his left and the other to his right ankle. It clings to the two small branches above the tree on the right to form a bridge.
