Detailed Solution

The Subsidiary Alliance was introduced by Lord Wellesly.
The Company opted for territorial expansions after the Battle of Buxar. In this context, the company utilised several measures. One such policy was the Subsidiary Alliance. It was introduced by Lord Wellesly. According to this policy, a British resident was placed in the courts of Indian rulers. Moreover, the Indian rulers were not allowed to keep armed forces. The Company forces were placed in the kingdoms for protection and the rulers had to pay for the maintenance of the forces. In case the ruler was unable to make the payment, they had to present a part of their territories as a penalty. The Nawab of Awadh, due to non-payment, ceded half of his territories to the British.
