The sum of first n natural numbers is

n (n + 1) 2

.
As we know that the first n natural numbers are 1,2,3,4,5,..,n.
So, first term:

a 1 = 1

.
Second terms:

a 2 = 2

.
Common difference,

∴ d = 2 − 1 = 1

Formula used for sum of first n term of A.P.:

S n = n 2 [2 a + (n − 1) d]

Applying,

= n 2 × [2 × 1 + (n − 1) × 1] = n 2 × [2 + n − 1] = n 2 × (n + 1) = n (n + 1) 2

Therefore, the sum of the first n natural numbers is

n (n + 1) 2
