It is given that the sum of two numbers is 95 and one of the numbers exceeds the other by 15.
So, let us assume that the smaller number is x. Now, as it is given that one number exceeds the other by 15, so the larger number will be 15 more than x, i.e., (x+15). It is also given that their sum is 95.
So, using this condition and the variables for the two numbers, we can form the equations as follows and simplify.

x + x + 15 = 95 2 x + 15 = 95

Subtracting 15 on both sides, we get,

2 x + 15 − 15 = 95 − 15 2 x = 80

Dividing by 2 on both sides, we get,

2 x 2 = 802 x = 40

So, we have the smaller number as 40.
Hence, the correct option is (1).
