Detailed Solution

The Sundarban Delta derives its name from the Sundari trees growing in the region.
Heritiera fomes is the scientific name of the Sundari trees, a popular mangrove species found along the Sundarbans. The evergreen tree has a medium height with shallow roots and breathing roots hanging from its branches. These trees are specially adapted to survive in the marshy delta region. Sundari trees are classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) due to the clearing of forests for plantation and development purposes. The Sunderban delta covering West Bengal and parts of Bangladesh is formed by the confluence of the Padma (Ganga in Bangladesh), Brahmaputra, and Meghna (tributary of the Brahmaputra in Bangladesh) rivers.
